Gardenias reward the right conditions with months of fragrant blooms. Follow these guidelines:

• Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. However, in hot climates, give it some afternoon shade, since harsh sun can scorch leaves or cause bud drop.
• Water: Water weekly during the first year to establish a strong root system, and more often in extreme heat. Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant. However, keep the soil evenly moist for the best bloom, and avoid soggy soil.
• Soil: Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained, acidic soil (about pH 5.0–6.5). Because alkaline soil makes the leaves yellow, acidic conditions are important.
• Cold Hardiness Zone: 8–11. Near the cold end of its range, mulch the root zone or grow it in a container that can be protected from hard freezes.
• Pruning & mulch: Shear lightly after flowering to maintain shape, and deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers. In addition, mulch to deter weeds, retain moisture, and keep roots cool.

Good to know: gardenias are considered toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested. Therefore, keep pets from nibbling on the plant.
