Do’s and Don’ts of Planting: Simple Tips for a Healthy Garden
Gardening is good for the soul — there is nothing like watching something you planted come to life. But a few simple habits make the difference between plants that struggle and plants that thrive. Here are the most important planting tips: the do’s and don’ts every gardener should know.
The Do’s
- Water early or late. Water in the early morning or near sunset so less is lost to evaporation and foliage has time to dry — wet leaves overnight invite disease.
- Mind your planting depth. For seeds, follow the depth on the packet; for plants, set the top of the root ball even with the soil surface. Planting too deep is a common cause of failure.
- Give plants space. Leave enough room between plants for air to circulate and roots to spread, based on each plant’s mature size.
- Mulch after planting. A 2–3 inch layer holds moisture, blocks weeds, and steadies soil temperature — just keep it off the stems.
The Don’ts
- Don’t ignore early problems. Catch pests and disease early. For fungal issues, an appropriate fungicide and better airflow usually solve it — do not let one sick leaf become a sick garden.
- Don’t over-fertilize. More is not better. Too much fertilizer can burn roots; use a slow-release feed and let plants find nutrients in healthy soil.
- Don’t overwork the soil. After watering and planting, leave the soil alone to settle and let roots establish their own structure.
- Don’t step on your beds. Walking on planting beds compacts the soil and crushes roots. If you must reach in, lay down a board to spread your weight.
