Parsoni Juniper: Year-Round Evergreen Color for the Holidays

When the rest of the garden goes quiet for winter, evergreens carry the show — and few do it as effortlessly as the Parsoni juniper. This hardy, low-spreading evergreen keeps its rich silvery blue-green color straight through the holidays, giving you living texture and cool color when you need it most.

A Tough, Good-Looking Evergreen

The Parsoni juniper (also called Parson’s juniper) grows quickly to about 2–3 feet tall and spreads roughly 6 feet wide, forming a lush, layered carpet. Its dense blue-green foliage looks fantastic year-round and especially festive in December. Best of all, it is just about indestructible: deer tend to leave it alone, and it shrugs off salt spray, drought, pests, and disease. This hardy evergreen really will not need any fussing.

Where It Shines in the Landscape

Parson’s juniper is a designer’s friend. Let it cascade over a wall, a raised bed, or a cluster of rocks for instant texture and cool color. It turns a slope you hate mowing into a low-maintenance feature and works wonders to stop soil erosion. It also makes a distinctive low hedge or border.

Easy Planting & Care

  • Light: Full to partial sun.
  • Soil: Any well-drained soil. Junipers prefer neutral to slightly acidic ground, so on alkaline soil choose an acidic (evergreen) fertilizer.
  • Mulch: Add a 2–3 inch layer to hold moisture, but keep it off the trunk to avoid disease and pests.
  • Tough by nature: Its salt and pollution tolerance makes it an excellent “street shrub.”

You can plant it almost any time of year, as long as you avoid harsh temperature extremes. Not sure it suits your area? Check your region on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
