Juniper Varieties: Evergreen Junipers for Privacy, Slopes & Winter Color

Junipers are the workhorses of the winter garden. While everything else goes bare, these tough evergreens hold their cool blue-green color through the coldest months — perfect for holiday curb appeal, privacy, and erosion control. Here are four juniper varieties we love and exactly where each one shines.

Parsoni Juniper — Low & Spreading

Parsoni juniper grows about 2–3 feet tall and spreads to 6 feet, forming a dense, layered carpet. Use it to cover slopes, stop erosion, and cascade over walls. Deer-, salt-, and drought-tolerant, it is about as low-maintenance as evergreens get.

Blue Arrow / Skyrocket — Tall & Narrow

Blue Arrow Skyrocket juniper shoots straight up in a slim, columnar form, making it ideal for a living privacy screen or a vertical accent where width is tight. Plant a row for a fast, fuss-free green wall.

Spiny Greek Juniper — Upright Pyramid

Spiny Greek juniper forms a handsome upright, pyramidal shape with dense silvery-green foliage — a classic choice for formal accents, entryways, and container plantings.

Prince of Wales — Carpet-Forming Groundcover

Prince of Wales juniper hugs the ground in a low, spreading mat that takes on a plum tint in winter. It is a beautiful groundcover for slopes and large open areas.

Growing Junipers

All junipers want full to partial sun and well-drained soil — they dislike soggy feet. They prefer neutral to slightly acidic ground, so feed with an acidic (evergreen) fertilizer if your soil runs alkaline. Mulch 2–3 inches deep, kept off the trunk. Their salt and pollution tolerance makes them superb “street” and coastal plants. For more growing tips, see the University of Florida IFAS Gardening Solutions.
