The Parsoni Juniper (Juniperus davurica ‘Parsonii’) is also known as Parson’s juniper or Dahurian juniper. It is one of the most dependable spreading groundcover junipers you can grow. It forms a dense, soft-textured mound of bluish-green, feathery foliage that stays low, just 2 to 3 feet tall, while spreading 4 to 10 feet wide. As a result, that ground-hugging, gracefully spreading habit makes the Parsoni Juniper ideal as a groundcover, for erosion control on slopes and banks, or cascading over a wall. Best of all, it holds its rich color all year long.

The Parsoni Juniper is a low-maintenance, easy-to-grow evergreen. Follow these simple guidelines:

• Sunlight: Thrives in full sun and also tolerates some shade. Generally, full sun gives the best color and densest growth.
• Water: Water regularly to establish a strong root system, with more frequent watering in extreme heat. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant and needs only occasional water.
• Soil: Adaptable to most soils, though it prefers dry, well-drained soil (slightly acidic is ideal). It will not tolerate overly wet soil or standing water, because that can cause root rot.
• Cold Hardiness Zone: 4–9.
• Pruning: Prune to shape only in the early stages of growth to encourage branching. However, avoid cutting back into older, bare wood, since junipers do not reliably regrow from old wood.
